I take it all back from my post of yesterday. I am so proud I feel I've almost laid it myself! To thwart blackbirds I have put a metal grid over that area of pond. The frogs can still get in and out in other parts of the pond. Suz

Results exceeded even my wildest expectations. 85 common frogs, including 11 pairs in amplexus. 16 smooth newts also - these usually tend to come about a month after the frogs. I know the figure for the frogs is probably 100+, but I had to stop for lunch whilst I could still see them swimming and surfacing. Also, the caught ones were starting to appear stressed. Some just kept evading the net as well. Interestingly found a clump of previously un-noticed and disintengrated (?newts) frogspawn at the bottom of the pond. Since only 11 of 85 were females, I'm guessing more will come later. Reformed Teetotaller

I always get this with the first laid clump. Lots of little clumps, instead of one big one. Later laid clumps appear more normal. Newts had their fill by then? Reformed Teetotaller

Have been watching activity on 'Pond Cam'...amazing activity tonight, compared to earlier in the week, where all the frogs might as well have been Gnome statuettes! One thing..... Leads to another... Since the pond is now 3 years old, I think all the original batch from 2006 came back this year. Hoping for even more next year, since 2007 was a very good year. Reformed Teetotaller
